The seminar Methods and Methodology of Research Software Engineering, offered by the Chair of Learning Technologies in collaboration with Dr. Julian Dehne, provides a practice-oriented introduction to empirical methods and their use in the context of Research Software Engineering. Aimed at Master’s students, the course focuses on quantitative and qualitative methods such as interviews, survey, scientific observation and more. Moreover, the newly created RIGHT-framework [2603.15366] To be FAIR or RIGHT? Methodological [R]esearch [I]ntegrity [G]iven [H]uman-facing [T]echnologies using the example of Learning Technologies is introduced as a methodology to distinguish between different study designs in the context of human-facing research software engineering. This course also serves as a testbed for teaching methods and content envisioned for the emerging RSE Master’s curriculum. Through hands-on activities, including interviews with researchers and the development of case studies, students gain practical insights while contributing to the ongoing refinement of RSE education.
